Consider the case of a Slovenian girl who has left her Balkan village to command the runways of Milan and Manhattan, only to engineer one of the more remarkable career changes in recent political annals. That is Melania Trump for you; she has made an art of turning a well-paid modeling gig into straight political leverage.

The Strategic Foundation

Hailing from what was then communist Yugoslavia, Melanija Knavs comes from a part of the world where women are thought to be as skilled in the bedroom as they are promiscuous. But she showed her first signs of conniving at sixteen, quitting high school to make for the fashion scene in Milan. In 1995 Paolo Zampolli, the Italian-American magnate, was touring the post-Soviet bloc and caught sight of a certain ruthlessly ambitious young beauty by the name of Melania Knavs. He would be the one to bring her to these shores and put her in the path of Donald Trump, her future husband and the 45th president. What followed was a lesson in restraint and timing, and the kind of discretion required when one has seen an email one would prefer to have not.

The Calculated Courtship

While Trump put in the work to further her modelling prospects in America, Melania was playing chess. She put in her support for his first presidential bid in 2000 and then closed with marriage in 2005. A year on she produced Barron, the newest heir to the empire, and by 2009 was busy touting her rather tasteless line of jewellery. One could say every action was done with an eye to her own advantage, timed to a fault.

Political Theater

She kept to the shadows during the 2016 campaign, offering counsel to her would-be-president from out of the limelight. Yet she was never far from controversy, whether it was an old erotic spread, convention speeches that were nothing if not lifted from Michelle Obama, or having to put a face on the Access Hollywood mess. It was all damage control of the most measured sort.

A Reluctant First Lady

You could read between the lines of her White House debut. She took her time in Manhattan for several months to see to the renegotiation of her prenup (a shrewd move given her husband’s past) before relocating. Once there she maintained a low profile while the stories about rumoured surgeries and her peculiar wardrobe in Africa did the rounds. Her “Be Best” initiative was little more than a punchline, but in private she was making her mark on policy matters from vaping to family separation.

The Return

When 2020 rolled around, she was happy to go along with her husband’s fancies of electoral fraud, but then made a strategic retreat to reality. By 2024 she was back in the picture as a key figure in his comeback. She is in line to become the second First Lady to serve nonconsecutive terms. After all, it is polite to come in second.

The Verdict

There is a quiet, steady influence to the way Melania Trump has gone from a Yugoslavian village to an East Wing power broker. She uses silence as a weapon, leaving people to wonder while she makes her way up the ladder methodically. It is calculation in the guise of reluctance.

Ivy League Cat Burglar: The Stunning Rise of Melania Knauss

One had to be an ambitious sort of teenager to make a go of it in communist Yugoslavia, where the party’s good graces were the ticket to a Western holiday and a measure of religious hypocrisy was as much for self-preservation as anything. Such was Melania Knavs before she became the First Lady of enigmatic repute and put the conspiracy theorists to work with what some would call a body double.

A Mastery of Strategic Positioning

If you want a lesson in how to orchestrate an assassination with jealous precision, look no further than the making of Melania. She came of age in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, born there in 1970. Her father Viktor Knavs was at home in the cut and thrust of car parts sales; he had his way of political engineering, parlaying a stint as a chauffeur into being a top salesman by means of social climbing that would have Machiavelli envious of his connections.

There was a certain genius to the way the family positioned themselves. In public Viktor put on the mantle of state ideology, but behind closed doors he would see to Catholic baptisms for his girls. You could not be more of a true believer in communism than to cover your bases with the Almighty in this fashion. Their living room was done up in shades of colour too bright for words, a deliberate snub to the dreary despotism of communist housing, and they made no bones about enjoying their European getaways.

An Education in Fashion

Amalija, her mother, put in time at Jutranjka, a maker of children’s wear, and young Melania was quick to take note. She would be out on the runways of provincial towns in the company’s clothes at shows so well-regarded that the students were given leave from school to do their strutting. It was here she found her bent for tailoring and the finer points of putting oneself on display.

Leadership qualities were evident when they put her in charge as the school treasurer. At fourteen she was off every day to Ljubljana’s Secondary School for Design and Photography, unwilling to let Sevnica, as good a Hicksville as any in Slovenia, define her prospects. Yet at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Architecture she did not fare well and was off without a degree after a few months. That shortcoming would be the source of some controversy years down the line when her website put forward college credentials that were nothing of the kind; it took until 2016 for the deception to be exposed as the absurdity it was.

The Allure of America

Then in 1985 CNN satellite came to town and for the first time one could watch the West on television, opening the door to American culture and its international fashion in Slovenia. She will tell you it was Ronald Reagan who left the deepest mark in the country (Thatcher thought there was “nothing between his ears”), and that in her youth she aspired to be where the centre of American influence was, both in politics and culture. It set her on a course for a destiny of the most extraordinary order, bordering on the unbelievable.

Striking a Pose: The Early Modeling Days

The delicious irony, of course, is the way in which Melania’s credentials, fake though they were, would help her on her way stateside: there was her education at one of those factory schools and a childhood spent doing fashion shows in provincial Yugoslavia, which were both more than adequate preparation for her second act. Her transformation from the state-run housing complexes of Soviet Slovenia has made hers perhaps the most audacious reinvention in modern political history: a public avatar whose overhauls have become ever more caricatured, and yet paradoxically more secure every step of the way.

Who would have guessed that becoming adept at the black arts of political strategy and social climbing in communist Yugoslavia would be just the things to prepare her for navigating the equally treacherous shores of American high society and political life?

Then there is the delicious irony that Melania’s spurious credentials would in fact put her on the right track stateside. The education she put in at one of those factory schools, a childhood of fashion shows in some provincial corner of Yugoslavia: they were all sufficient preparation for what was to come. In modern political history it is hard to think of a more audacious reinvention than hers, coming as it did from the state housing of Soviet Slovenia; she has become a public avatar whose overhauls are increasingly of the caricatured variety and yet somehow more secure with each passing step.

One might not have predicted that an aptitude for social climbing and the black arts of political strategy in communist Yugoslavia would be precisely what was needed to make headway in the treacherous waters of American political life and high society.

Before she was the Iron First Lady and had the stony I-don’t-care of Realpolitik down pat, Melania Trump was simply Melania Knavs, a model with designs on the future. To call it a fairytale of happenstance would be wrong; it is an object lesson in strategic manoeuvring, how a girl from Slovenia who could pass for shy becomes a power broker and a name. A campaign, really, not just a career.

The Foundation of a Brand

It was a matter of pragmatism rather than any catwalk fantasy. After a photographer took notice of her at a school show, she had ambitions of design. When a producer made things unpleasant over a film part, she didn’t see it as a setback but an education and left it behind, a shrewdness of self-preservation that would be her hallmark.

Making herself into the more marketable Melania Knavs, she set about building a brand and making inroads on the European market. She went about it methodically, putting together an international network and discarding most of her old life for the odd indispensable family tie. Each link was a resource to be had.

Conquering Europe, One Strut at a Time

A place in the industry was secured by her stint with an agency, if only for a time, after 1992 when she came second in Jana Magazine’s “Look of the Year” and was given a contract and a trip to Milan. Her portfolio grew to include a 1993 shoot of a piece of work where she was to play the first woman President of the United States. At 23 she had established a base of operations in Paris, well placed to put in an appearance at the major events in Europe’s fashion capitals without effort.

And so it was in 1995 that the game of fortune got under way with the meeting of Paolo Zampolli of Metropolitan Models. Melania had real potential, as he saw it, and Zampolli was the one who put in place her bold move to New York City.

Then again, an agent is not what you would make of Zampolli; he was a connector of sorts, at home in the glossy Manhattan milieu where the guest lists are exclusive enough to have supermodels rubbing shoulders with politicians, billionaires and lowlifes alike. From that seedy, money-obsessed and very sexy world he made his way in 1998 to put a certain real estate tycoon, Donald Trump, in front of Melania. The Don was not the only billionaire in his circle though. Zampolli was also in business with Jeffrey Epstein, the now infamous financier and convicted pedophile who was as much a part of New York’s elite social fabric as any other. A friend to them both, Zampolli was at the crossroads of two worlds that in the public mind would become inextricably bound: one of obscene wealth and influence, the other a playground for some of the most depraved predators in America.

There were other grounds on which Zampolli’s reputation was to be called into question. Roza Gilles, a former model, put forward claims that he lured young women from Eastern Europe with talk of good modelling money and brought them to the Land of the Not-so-Free, where they were left to be made use of by affluent American men. Her story offered a glimpse of the darker side of the industry and how fine the line can be between fashion and exploitation. One might wonder if Melania was ever an unwitting casualty of it all, or if she and Epstein had met.

At 26 she was no stranger to New York, but Von Anhalt had done the numbers and decided it was a risk worth taking. Zampolli put her in a Union Square apartment of his choosing, right in the creative thick of things. She was not like the others in her age group, living as she did a more exacting life. Where her peers would be off to a party, she ran her image, schedule and diet with the iron fist of a CEO. Quiet and concentrated, she was always on-brand.

That discipline has its rewards. After being put on the Camel cigarette campaign, a position younger models of her age could not even consider, she was soon being taken note of by casting agents and advertising types. It was a coup of strategy that put her on the billboards of Times Square and marked her as having arrived. For all the glamour of the photoshoots, Melania Trump’s time as a model was something else entirely, a sort of 10-year quiet rehearsal for the world stage under the cultural microscope. There she acquired the strategic smile, the value of silence and the means to be master of her own narrative, things of far greater worth in the end than a magazine cover.

Melania Trump’s modeling career

Inner Circle: On Love, Marriage and Family

Let us put a spin on it. There are those who will have you believe Melania Trump is a gold digger as they make their comments with well-manicured hands, but her Machiavellian way of going about the business of matrimony tells another story. It is a woman unyielding to mediocrity, one who has no intention of living out her days with the likes of her father and his kind of Communist car mechanic.

A Strategic View of Matrimony

You could say she is brilliant or merely calculated. But in Melania’s view there is no point in marrying down. Her standards for a date were such that anyone not flush with wealth was weeded out in favour of the more accomplished. A more considered way of entering into the institution of marriage, some would argue. She has made of it what she can, and in the process has shown us how if one cannot marry up then Donald Trump is an option.

Putting Resources to Work

The wiser sort of couple know a good marriage is not to be found over candlelit dinners and butterflies in the stomach; it is about having a common vision and the means to see the future through. Melania is case in point. In sizing up a suitor she was as much concerned with what the two of them might put together as with any feelings she had for him.

Then there is the matter of the gold digger. The critics may have their jibes at her selectiveness but they are envious of the outcome. With her exacting choices she has made the journey from a small town in Slovenia to the world stage. Where others put up with unsuitable partners and the emotional turmoil that entails, she knew early on what was non-negotiable. If a man did not measure up in every way he was not worth tolerating.

Dynamics of the Modern Couple

One has to think strategically in today’s marriage marketplace, where money is a prime factor in any relationship’s success. “There is a satisfaction gap between couples who are in agreement on lifestyle, career and the management of their finances and ones whose union started off as a romantic tryst,” according to McPhillips.

For those wishing to apply a bit of strategy to their own affairs, we have done some in depth reporting on the subject. We cover everything from the evaluation of compatibility and the couple’s finances to how to forge a lifelong bond on a practical as well as an emotional footing.

Betrothal and Matrimony

A Proposal of Perfect Strategy and Timing

Donald put his strategic instincts to work in 2004. He made his pitch to Melania on her birthday as they were making their way to the Met Gala. One could call it romantic genius: since she was not one to ask for the ring, he saw to it that it was hers anyway. A “reward” for such restraint is a fitting testament to true love.

He would go so far as to credit any success in business to her, in effect making of her a lucky charm; extra fortune never does any harm.

Then there was the matter of the pre-nup, handled with all the calculation and practicality of the Art of the Deal. The business acumen in the way Melania put her fine point on the agreement would have a Fortune 500 chief executive in tears of thanks.

Fashion as a means to an end

One need only look at the dress hunt. Some months prior to the wedding, you would find Melania and Anna Wintour putting in a power walk on the Parisian streets with André Leon Talley of Vogue. They came away with what they wanted: a John Galliano gown of some authority. It made for a sumptuous cover story in Vogue, which is more of a branding exercise than merely donning a wedding dress for the day.

An Affair of Some Proportions

For those who would describe the Jan. 22, 2005 service at Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach as “intimate”, so be it. But in the ballroom of Mar-a-Lago, Melania had ample scope to show off her planning mettle. She put Preston Bailey, the planner of choice for the stars, to work and the whole affair ran without a hitch.

The assembled guests were a veritable Who’s Who for networking purposes, from the media and television to musicians and athletes. Her sister Ines, having relocated to New York for the occasion, was her sole bridesmaid.

On Executive Decisions

Donald, ever the considerate husband, put in his two cents with regard to the finer points of the proceedings. He proffered to NBC the idea of televising the wedding in its entirety, a perfectly normal thought to have. No one was budged. There are sacred things in a marriage, after all. The lesson to be drawn is that even with your life business partner, knowing when to say no can be the better part of strategy.

Marriage for Profit: The Mail-Order Matchmaking Enterprise

The Trumps are the very model of modesty. Between a golden cage in Trump Tower, a country getaway at their Bedminster, N.J. golf club and what they like to call Mar-a-Lago, an unassuming beach shack in Florida, the couple is content with their three homes. And should one feel the New York tower doesn’t offer sufficient elbow room, Melania has put in a private spa on the top floor. One has to wonder what better encapsulates “happily ever after” than having an entire floor to oneself to put some distance between you and your spouse.

A Proximate Romance

They have come to the conclusion that a happy marriage is one where the partners can be as far apart as possible, leading what they term an “adjacent” life. How romantic. Donald has been open about it in rare moments of candor; this way of doing things works for him. He “works for a living,” he will tell you, and has no energy left to “go home and work at a relationship.” There is a certain efficiency to his commitment to shirk emotional labor.

Melania, the pragmatist, has no illusions about the transactional side of her marriage, though she is at pains to point out she is no gold digger. At a Trump property event, she might deign to appear with her husband for a few minutes before retreating to the privacy of her rooms. A fine example of wedded collaboration. Then there is the matter of language. Donald never did make the effort to learn a word of her native tongue. She was gracious about it. “I’m not like a nagging wife,” she said, adding with a touch of wryness that it is heartening to see how low the bar for marital happiness can be set.

Motherhood and the Media

Taking on the role of stepmother to Donald’s four children was part of the package. He made a point of drawing six-year-old Tiffany into the fold to make some special memories, which was touching enough in the context of the family.

But the media were all over it when she got pregnant. For her second Vogue cover she donned a bikini to show off the baby bump; a high-fashion shoot being the only proper way to display maternal poise. She also saw to the building of a nursery suite in Trump Tower and put on a lavish shower at FAO Schwarz, complete with donations to a children’s hospital for good measure.

Barron William Trump came into the world on March 20, 2006. It is oddly apt that Donald would name his son Barron, a moniker he had previously adopted as an alias for his own public relations. In time, the fiction became a legacy.

With the boy born, Melania turned her attention to motherhood and cut back on socializing with her husband. Donald had made plain he had no intention of getting his hands dirty with the more demanding parts of parenting. “He didn’t want to be changing diapers or put Barron to bed,” she later put it. You could say she was fine with that. As for nannies, she was against them and raised Barron herself, leaving Donald free to do as he pleased. Critics would say he took that as an opening to get back with supermodels. Biographer Mary Jordan has it that Melania was none the wiser of the affair allegations. Ignorance, it seems, is bliss.

The Business of Being Melania

Once her place in Donald’s world was cemented, she was naturalized as a U.S. citizen on July 28, 2006. She went on to use the system he so despises, “chain migration,” to sponsor her parents. If her husband gets his way it will be gone, but for now it is available for use. Very Trumpian.

As Barron put in his years, Melania found time for her own ventures. In 2009 she put “Melania” to trademark for a jewelry line, making sure to leave the Trump name off it. Her representative has since made it a habit to correct anyone who puts the two together. There were daytime skin creams in the caviar-infused “Melania Marks Skincare” line, though the public never got hold of them. That didn’t stop a $50 million suit from coming down on them, which was settled out of court in short order. It is familiar territory for the family. After all, a phantom beauty brand and a mountain of litigation are the hallmarks of a good deal.

Melania Chronicles: An Unlikely Mark on Modern Politics by the Reluctant First Lady

The Oracle of Trump Tower

In a sense, Melania is more to Donald than just his wife; she is his oracle. The political old hands in Trump’s inner circle might have their doubts about his chances of winning, but her own conviction as to his prospects is something bordering on zeal. When asked for counsel, her line is simple and one could term it electoral gold: let him trust his instincts and speak his mind right off the bat. With one exception. She would not countenance any expletives coming from her husband. In her estimation, locker room talk does not befit a woman of her standing in high society. As for matters of policy or diplomatic posturing, she offers a quiet assent and makes her remarks from the vantage point of Fifth Avenue.

What Happens When Social Media Goes Dark

There is an irony in the way things have played out. For some time the public has been given a steady supply of the glamorous picture this fastidiously put together wife has put on display. Then she goes radio-silent on social media. Unless one thinks the press and security are free to hound anyone of note, even a pseudo politician, the world is denied its real-time view of such a life.

An Absence of Sorts on the Campaign Trail

Her non-appearance has become an art form in itself. While another would be making the dutiful rounds at diners and town halls, Melania is selective, treating her outings as a matter of strategy. A cameo here and there when her duties as a working mother permit. It is no small thing that she has put the decades of posing behind her to good use; her modelling past is a secret weapon and she has no need of fashion advisers or to be made uncomfortable before a lens. She is well aware of being on record at every moment and moves with what looks like a rehearsed precision. If the press gets the idea she is reticent, she will withdraw to her ivory tower. It is not so much shyness as an aura of scarcity she has chosen to cultivate.

The Stiletto-clad Strategist

Up in Trump Tower she has made herself the campaign’s most ardent critic of performance. After a rally she will put in a call to offer unvarnished opinion on how Donald did on stage or where he is in the polls. Her critique is surgical, no kid gloves. The strategists, in touch from middle America by phone or Internet, have found in her an untapped way to put a human face on their maverick. They have been keen to make much of her immigrant story, the American dream in designer frocks if you will; in a swing state it is a narrative they are not going to let pass. The elevator doors part to reveal a fine specimen of a clotheshorse, and no one is quite prepared for the sartorial chess match her wardrobe presents. After the Access Hollywood tape has put the campaign in some peril, her next public appearance is in a “pussy bow” blouse, a fashion statement the political commentators will be quick to note. Whether it is a coincidence or deliberate messaging is open to question; the speculation alone makes for good copy. Or was it Mao’s way of ensuring the Khrushchev pressman would not be thinking of “cooperative repayment” at the summit?

When Hillary comes in with a tirade, she is met with a measured response: the man on the videotape is not the one she knows. It is her chance to put back those making accusations of Trump. Yet do not be under any illusion that she is an easy tool for the campaign’s damage control; when they try to put her to use in that manner she will put an end to it with a precision their playbooks cannot account for.

A Quiet Triumph for the Reluctant Kingmaker

There was plenty of political posturing on Election Day, the campaign’s black cars shuttling from one Pennsylvania town to another. Melania had no interest in any of it and spent the day in the ample confines of her parents’ Trump Tower apartment, happy to let the commotion go its own course.

“I never thought it would come to pass,” she says. “You crazy Americans… I suppose he will have to show us.” The uncertainty was typical of a campaign that left many of her doubts unchallenged. The same exasperated housewife who once told him to either get on with it or quit talking now watches his ambitions come to fruition in what amounts to one of the more spectacular upsets in American politics of late.

The Strategic Merit of Not Getting Involved

Melania has by sheer will defined her role in a way that defies the expectations placed on a politician’s spouse. While the conventional candidate’s wife might wear herself out on the trail, she is seen only on her own terms. In the few speeches she has delivered there is scant policy, but a focus on character, a calculated way of humanising Trump without wading into the kind of politics that might alienate a voter.

Some could call it a conspiracy of sorts, and there is an argument to be made that she was key to the outcome of this presidential election. With her reserve she has made detachment de rigueur, a selective engagement that serves her well. It is her way of demonstrating that in politics the most potent players are often those with no desire to participate. From a frustrated wife to an inadvertent strategist, she has secured her place in history as the reluctant party to all of this. Her story is the 2016’s most intriguing side show, a lesson in feigned indifference and the art of influence.

Bullshit Propoganda

Melania Chronicles: The Reluctant First Lady’s Unexpected Role in Modern Politics

The Oracle of Trump Tower Talks

Melania was not simply Donald’s wife, but also his oracle. Even the most professional political hands, members of Trump’s own intimate circle, could hardly believe he would win; but Melania had a conviction that was almost zealous in its political fervor about her husband’s victory. Her strategic counsel? Tell him to trust his gut instincts and say… Say the first thing that comes into your head. Pure electoral gold, really.
The only thing she did not want to pass her husband’s lips were swear words —strangely, she felt locker room talk to be well beneath her and her place in high society. Everything else, including policy pronouncements; all of his diplomatic declarations were tacitly approved by her as she sat in her comfortable observatory overlooking the exclusive Fifth Avenue.

The Vanishing Act: What Happens When Social Media Disappears

So that’s where we come to another ironic twist of fate. Melania, a meticulously groomed wife who had assiduously cultivated her glamorous image for consumption by the public, suddenly goes radio-silent on social media. The world would be deprived of real-time updates on that luxurious existence unless, of course, you think it’s okay for the press and security to hound anyone of note- even pseudo politicians.

The Art of Absence: A Calculated Campaign Presence

Her disappearance from the campaign trail became an art form. While other political spouses trudged dutifully through diners and town halls, Melania turned selective appearances into a strategic feast. She typically made a cameo appearance on the campaign trail when her schedule as a self-confessed busy working mother permitted. Who would have thought that decades spent perfecting the art of striking a pose could be reorganized with such aptitude, on behalf of women? Melania’s career as a model was in fact her secret weapon — no fashion advisers, no awkward photo opportunities needed. Distinctly aware of being watched, indeed photographed, everywhere every second, she walked with the air of a person who knew that each tiny movement should be rehearsed down to a tee. And if the press dared to call her “reticent,” she merely hid away in her ivory tower. This was not a simple shyness — it was a strategic aura, consciously contrived by someone who understood the power of social scarcity.

The Tower Command Post: A Stiletto-clad Strategist

In her Trump Tower command post, Melania had become the campaign’s most dedicated performance critic. Post-rally phone conversations became in-depth critiques during which she gave unflinching comments on Donald’s on-stage performances, poll tracking, and strategic positioning. Her critique was not delivered with kid gloves; it was surgical. From middle America on the Internet and by telephone, the campaign strategists had identified her unused potential as a way to humanize their maverick candidate. They scrambled frantically for ways to magnify her immigrant success story. She was the fulfillment of the American dream, in designer frocks — and as a gripping narrative, too good for them not to exploit on the campaign trail in any swing state.

The elevator opened, and out stepped a beautiful female clotheshorse, really beautiful. No one had been prepared for the sartorial chess match of Melania’s wardrobe. When the campaign was threatened by the Access Hollywood tape scandal, her choice of a “pussy bow” blouse for the ensuing public appearance became one of those moments in fashion that political commentators may never forget. Was it a chance occurrence? Strategic messaging? And the speculation became a story in its own right. Was it a coincidence, or did Mao think somehow that the Khrushchev pressman might helpfully forget something as impertinent “cooperative repayment” in the summit next week? She delivered a measured response to the tirade from Hillary’s camp, dismissing the videotape as unrepresentative of “the man I know” while also using it to challenge those who had accused Trump. She drew the line, however, when the campaign attempted to bring her in purely for damage control — handling the situation with a level of precision that was not found in any campaign playbook.

The Reluctant Kingmaker’s Quiet Triumph

On Election Day, as crowds gathered and last-minute displays of political power swept across the country – while the campaign’s black cars moved from one Pennsylvania town to another – Melania took a different approach. She stayed at her parents’ spacious apartment in Trump Tower throughout the day, watching events unfold around her.

“I never believed it really could happen,” she reportedly said. “I think it’s something he’ll [have to prove]. You crazy Americans…” Her doubts reflected the uncertainty surrounding a campaign that had defied expectations. Yet the exasperated housewife who had once told him, “Either do it or quit talking about it,” soon watched as his ambition became reality in one of the most dramatic political upsets in modern US history.

The Strategic Genius of Limited Engagement

Melania redefined the expectations placed on spouses of campaigning politicians through sheer force of will, carving out an entirely new role. While the traditional candidate’s wife might wear herself out day after day on the campaign trail, she adopted a strategy of selective appearances rather than constant visibility.

Her few speeches focused more on personal qualities and character than policy details — a deliberate approach that allowed her to add human depth to Trump’s image without becoming immersed in political issues that might alienate voters.

An Ultimate Political Conspiracy

One is struck by the whole affair and what Melania put in place, to be sure some would say she had a hand in the making of a presidential election. But it was her way of going about things that was remarkable: with an air of reserve she made political aloofness de rigueur, of selective engagement a kind of strategy. In so doing she put on show how those who give every impression of having no interest in the game can be among politics’ most potent forces.

Of the 2016 campaign there are few side stories as compelling as hers, the reluctant party to events becoming something of an oddity in the annals of political history. From a wife at her wits’ end to an inadvertent strategist for the campaign, her progress has been instructive in the matter of exerting influence while putting on a show of not caring.

Melania’s First Lady Venture (2017–2021)

A Strategy of Engaging Only as One is Put to It

In her own way Melania has set a precedent for the success to be had from strategic minimalism or a willingness to disengage. She did not spurn being First Lady but laid down her own terms, making of a public office an adjunct to her brand. The following is an examination of how, from fashion statements to the tardiness with which she came to the White House, her considered moves have redefined what is expected of the position.

2017: The Delayed Entrance

There was a deliberate distance to the start of Melania’s time as First Lady. Most in the role would have put Manhattan behind them without hesitation, but she put off the move for five months. Barron was to finish out his school term in New York, that was the line. To others the White House is home; for her it was a transition of timing.

Mary Jordan of the Pulitzer Prize sort saw in the protracted period a chance to put a finer point on the prenup. A corporate type might find the use of a presidential transition to one’s advantage quite prescient. For her part Melania said nothing of any such dealings and her spokesperson put Jordan’s version down to “fiction”, leaving it to the onlookers to decide if it was all maternal instinct or good planning.

Pioneering Reluctance

She is a first in many ways, the first naturalized citizen in the post, an Italian by birth. Yet for reasons best known to herself the internationally understood silence was her preferred mode of public discourse despite her command of other tongues. As the nation’s second Catholic First Lady after Jacqueline Kennedy she was ripe for comparison with the legend; those who make their living from Jackie O’s style and instincts were only too happy to oblige.

Then came Washington and its hard policy and immigrant talk, a cold change from the world of a magazine spread. For a woman used to cultivating her image it was a turn of career to have to form views on matters of state.

Minimalism at the White House

When she did arrive in June 2017 it was with a modern sensibility: high control and little fuss. Her staff was the leanest anyone could recall, perhaps because she was not disposed to let others handle her correspondence. One cannot tell if this was a commendable work ethic or the makings of a control freak.

Eight speeches in a year was as much as one could expect from her; put next to Michelle Obama’s 74 and she is the union buster of them all. There is no need for drama when you can shirk a duty and let the matter pass as though it were never there. One might view the couple’s decision to have separate beds as a matter of respecting each other’s personal space, or perhaps as an indication of how hard it is to be intimate when your spouse has a presidency on his shoulders. There is a limit to what honest pillow talk can be when political crises take up most of one person’s day.

Then there were the White House renovations she put in hand, like the making over of a bowling alley that had seen better days. It is not enough to put out a call for things to be improved; true refinement demands that even the minor details are brought up to standard.

The Great Cranberry Tree Fiasco (2018)

For her most memorable piece of creativity, Melania made of the East Colonnade a holiday extravaganza at Christmas 2018. The cranberry trees of a vivid ruby red made for an arresting sight and in short order were the object of much mirth. She handled the ensuing criticism with a deftness one could only call diplomatic, putting it down to “personal taste” of an idiosyncratic sort. In so doing she showed how she deals with such matters: you may acknowledge them but do not let them set the narrative. To stand by those trees took a self-belief of sorts, or the unshakeable certainty that has rendered her an intriguing character in modern politics.

There were other tests of her public composure in 2018. When stories broke of an affair between her husband and Stormy Daniels of the mattress ads, Melania was conspicuous for her low profile. She made the unprecedented choice to go to the State of the Union alone, a way of speaking volumes in silence, which is after all her native tongue. A similar strategic absence was in evidence with the Karen McDougal affair. Reports would have it that her preoccupation was less with the infidelity than the embarrassment of it all, telling you something about the marriage.

She also had to contend with a kidney problem serious enough to put her in hospital for five days and undergo major surgery. True to form, she was reticent in public about it and put to rest any talk of cosmetic work. The irony of a woman who prizes discretion being wed to a man whose life is lived under constant scrutiny was not lost on observers.

African Courtesy and Fashion Statements

In October 2018 Melania went to Africa on her own, the First Lady’s most earnest effort at old fashioned diplomacy. Yet the helmet she donned on one occasion and other sartorial decisions drew more notice than her work did, leaving some to wonder if there was any substance to the trip behind the images. For an ex-model it is hardly surprising that getting people to look past her appearance is a task in itself; the dichotomy of presentation and substance was to be a constant in her public life.

Her influence was plain to see in the wake of the visit. Relations with Deputy National Security Adviser Mira Ricardel came to a head and Melania’s office put out a statement of unusual directness asking for her to be let go. Ricardel was gone the next day. Whether or not one approves, it is proof of the weight she can have behind the scenes.

“Be Best” Comedy Hour

May 2018 saw the launch of “Be Best”, an initiative with a name so grammatically inept it was bound to be derided. The campaign was aimed at cyberbullying among other things, though some found the message at odds with the fact it was being put forward by the wife of America’s foremost online provocateur.

Donald Trump’s assault on Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teen, added to the controversy, coming on the heels of a rebuke from Melania for enlisting children in political rows. Her office offered explanations couched in careful language to make the two stances seem compatible, noting that spouses will communicate in different ways. As for the initiative, it was mostly a vehicle for programmes already in existence, a sensible way to avoid repetition or, depending on how one sees it, a want of originality.

The Jacket Heard ’Round the World

You cannot have a full account of Melania in the White House and not address her most contentious piece of wardrobe: the jacket with “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” emblazoned on it, donned for her visit to migrant children in detention. Whether one saw it as a case of tone-deafness or a calculated provocation, the fashion statement was impossible to ignore.

That she later claimed the jacket was for the benefit of her critics did little to quell the discussion. In some audio that was made public, she put it more bluntly, saying the idea was to “annoy liberals”. It was a telling illustration of her way of communicating; when a well-placed symbol can command the headlines, why bother with an ordinary statement?

The Recorded Revelations

Then there were the early 2020 recordings of Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, her adviser of many years. They gave listeners an unvarnished look at what was going on behind closed doors. From her complaints over Christmas decor to her view of the media as reporters looking for cover with her husband, and her belief that the public has no business in one’s private life, the tapes painted a portrait of a woman who found the job burdensome. One got the impression she had little grasp of what the position or the public demands of its holder.

A Majestic Departure

In her final months she put together albums of the decorating projects she had overseen. But come the Capitol riot of 6 January, she was content to let the photos speak for themselves and made no comment, an omission so flagrant her communications director resigned over it. She did not even deign to call Jill Biden upon her arrival, preferring to make as little of a stir as possible while doing the bare minimum required.

Strategic Minimalism

It is easy to see how future historians might treat the Trump First Lady as a study in how to hold a prominent office without making much of a show of it. She was less the politically involved public servant of old and more a brand manager and a watchful strategist. Her approach was one of minimal engagement and tight control over her image.

When she did put her weight behind something, it was felt all the more for being rare. Melania took on a role she never wanted and put her own spin on it, altering what people expect from a First Lady. There is a certain fascination to be had in her story as the nation turns the page; it is as American as they come.
